Papahānaumoku,

also known as Papa.

The Hawaiian goddess and mother of Earth and nature, the primordial force of creation who has the power to give life and to heal with the spirit of life-living, loving and forgiving. Here at PAPA, we keep her spirit, principles and lessons front of mind in the work we do.

Heyyoo!

My name is Jean, and I am the sole owner and operator of Papa Plants Chicago. There are so many thoughts and emotions behind Papa Plants, I don’t know where to start.

Okay so the Biophilic design journey. As a tween I’ve grown in the service industry and helped open 8 restaurants and 3 gyms. While my main role was always on the service/systemic side of things, I played a big part in the aesthetic design of each location. Once we started incorporating natural elements to the spaces, it was an absolute game changer and our patrons were quite vocal about it. As much as I’d like to accredit Pinterest for everything I’ve learned, nothing beats experience.

To be fair, I’ve single handedly killed at least 100 plants. I used to be a “google general guidelines” plant parent, and followed general care instructions to a T. It wasn’t until recently I’ve really learned how to listen to the foliage. Not literally, but understanding what they need by the pH, EC and moisture level of their soil, the humidity in their air, the amount of sun hitting their leaves, if they like being talked to nice or not. Now I really have it down to a science, in conjunction with the knack for aesthetically pleasing spaces, I am confident in my craft and obsessively love what I do.
